GRANITE

GRANITE

Granite is everywhere. From beautiful sculptures in museums, impressive columns, magnificent arches and thick blocks, to walls, corridors, fireplaces, floor tiles and countertops are made of this magnificent stone.

Granite is an igneous rock, meaning it is composed of molten lava deep within the earth’s crust. As the lava cools, it crystallizes under high pressure. Crystallization is what causes the spots on this stone. The longer it takes for a molten stone to cool, the larger the color spots on that stone will be. In fact, this stone gets its name from the Latin word granum, which means grain. The cost of granite varies depending on the desired color, texture and application.

CARE

Why is granite a good building material?

Granite is a good building material because it is durable, environmentally friendly and easy to maintain. Granite is a natural stone that forms naturally in the earth and has many attractive characteristics.

Why does granite need to be sealed?

Granite needs sealing because it is a natural stone and natural stone is porous. The pores in granite can receive (or absorb) liquids and other substances. To slow absorption and increase the amount of time the substance can sit on the surface without cleaning, a sealer is applied to the granite. This helps protect the surface. Granite should only be sealed periodically. If your granite was sealed during installation by the company that installed it, you should not need to seal it for a period of time.

Why is my granite countertop rough?

Granite countertops are available in a variety of finishes. For example, there are polished finishes that are smooth and shiny. Additionally, there are “brushed” finishes that are more like a satin or matte finish. There are also “antique” and “leather” finishes. If your granite surface has one of these finishes, you will most likely feel that it is “rough”.

Why does granite change color when wet?

Granite is usually sealed during installation. If an impregnating sealer is used for this, a barrier is formed that causes water to accumulate on the surface of the granite. However, as the sealant wears off (or if no sealant was applied during installation), water will be absorbed by the granite and the stone will appear dark. In fact, this “water test” is how you determine if it’s time to reseal your granite countertops.

Why is granite so popular?

The popularity of granite is related to many things surrounding its natural composition and characteristics. The uniqueness of granite, its strength and the durability of natural stone contribute to its popularity.
